Overview

The United Nations Standard Products and Services Code® (UNSPSC®) is a hierarchical set of codes "used to
classify all products and services." An UNSPSC code provides multiple, layered categories for identifying goods and services. Each code has four levels of classification: segment, family, class, and commodity. Two digits are available for each level. (The UNSPSC web site http://www.unspsc.org provides more information about the codeset.)

Version 23.0701 is the level currently supported in the SCM application.

Below is a description of several codeset segments, with examples (Table 1).

The list of codes begins with the value 10000000. (These initial codes are related to animals and livestock ... probably not useful for hospitals.)
UNSPSC code 42000000 (Figure 1) begins the group of codes related to medical equipment and supplies.

Version

The UNSPSC® code table in Sourcing and Contract Management is Version 19.0501.

Some UNSPSC codes previously in use have been deleted in Version 19.0501. New codes have also been added to the total list. The descriptions of other codes have changed.

An Excel file contains the new codes, codes with changed descriptions, and obsolete (deleted) codes on tabbed worksheets.

Searching for UNSPSC-Coded Items

If your item records contain UNSPSC codes, you can use the UNSPSC codes in searching. The paragraphs below outline using UNSPSC codes in searches. For details about searching, click ? in the upper right of the Search panel.

To search by UNSPSC code for an item record:

Search results contain several columns of information that can be sorted and grouped in different ways. See Item Searches in the online documentation for details.

Note: When you search for a complete UNSPSC code ending in "00" (such as 42132200), the search actually looks for UNSPSC codes containing the first six integers, and any final two integers. So, the search would look for the code 42132200, but also for codes 42132201, 42132202, 42132203, 42132204, 42132205, and so on. See the ? Help on the Search panel for details.

UNSPSC Codes in Dynamic Analysis Groups

With the analysis tools, you can create dynamic analysis groups to classify and examine segments of your spend dollars. Several descriptors, such as: contract, department, vendor, manufacturer, UNSPSC code element , and others are available for defining analysis groups. See Creating and Using Analysis Groups for details.
